Mangoh W7702 failed to connect to the network

The module was purchased and had been developed one year ago. and After that, it hasn’t been used until I just recently took it out to re-development last month. But the module fails to connect to the network, I’m not sure whether it’s Sim card issue(the sim card is sierra wireless sim card that came with the module) or something else.
Here are some at command results:

In addition, when I’m walking through the SETUP Guide, in section 5.2(Send Sensor Data to AirVantage), I walked the instruction in that section:
$ ssh root@192.168.2.2

app start redCloud

app status

but on AirVantage dashboard, no update as the guide manual shows

is your sim card supporting GSM network?
Have you setup the correct APN in AT+CGDCONT?
what is the value of
AT!SELRAT?
AT!BAND?

Hi Jeremy,

Your device in not connected to the cellular network as the cm radio command tells.
Your module is LTE-M/NB-IoT and 2G, but it seems like you forced it into 2G mode.
You can change the RAT with the command cm radio rat LTE for LTE or cm radio rat AUTO for the automatic mode, etc.

The SIM in your module is NOT a Sierra Wireless SIM. It may not be an issue though. But the original SIM that was provided with this mangOH Red & associated with your device on AirVantage is not this one.

Hope it helps

.Thibs.

Hey Thibs

I tried to change the RAT with the command you recommended, but it doesnt change anything

root@swi-mdm9x28-wp:~# cm radio rat AUTO
root@swi-mdm9x28-wp:~# cm radio
Power: ON
Current Network Operator:
Current RAT: Module not registered on network, RAT not available
Status: Not registered and not currently searching for new operator (LE_MRC_REG_NONE)
Signal: No signal strength (0)
PS: Packet Switched Not registered (LE_MRC_REG_NONE)

BTW, is this one a Sierra Wireless SIM

root@swi-mdm9x28-wp:~# cm sim info

Hi Thibs,

How do I know whether the sierra wireless sim that was used last year is activated or deactivated?
Can I find it out on AirVantage?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Yes, ICCID 89332401000011495971 is activated. You can see it in your AirVantage account: https://eu.airvantage.net/monitor/systems/systemDetails?uid=12392fb000da47cea817c67cb6a9913b&company=6f4b5dfb847b49239b2940a839524690

This is BTW the SIM that was originally provided with your mangOH.

Regarding the RAT, you can try cm radio rat LTE as well (sometimes, the module scans LTE frequencies at last, and times out before reaching the good ones).

Hi Thibs,

Thanks for checking it for me. I’m wondering do I need to top up the Sierra Wireless SIM to resume the IoT service, because on AirVantage dashboard, it says
image
Looks like it’s a trial offer, I’m not sure whether the offer has been expired or anything that prevent me from using IoT cellular services and connecting to the network.

BTW, I tried cm radio rat LTE, and I’m still getting this:

any steps from here I can take to track down what is causing this or fix this?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
I confirm that your SIM is still active (you’ve not reached the 100MB yet), you don’t need to top up your account for now.
Could you please check that your APN is internet.sierrawireless.com with the command cm data ?

Hi Thibs,

Yes, the APN is internet.sierrawireless.com, please see the screenshot below:

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Thibs,

Do I need to activate the module?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Thibs,

Can you help me confirm that whether this sim card supports SMS message transmission?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
Back from vacation today, sorry for the delay.
Your module and SIM are activated already.
Your SIM does support SMS.

I can see data and sms traffic since Jul-13. I guess it’s working now, right?

.Thibs.

Hi Thibs,

No worries. Thanks for check it for me.
So I tried to send sms messages via at command and cm command as follows:
image
image

I think it indicates that the sms was sent sucessfully, also like you said from AV, the dashboard displays that there were sms transmission in the past days.

However, I’m running into another issue which is the sms is not received by the receiving unit, in this case, my cell phone. My cell phone is on LTE network, so is it impossible to send sms messages from 2g network to 4g network?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Thibs,

I think I figured it out, the sms message not received by my cell provider, but I tried with another Canadian cell provider and it received!! so it really depends on receiving unit service provider. I figured out this sierra wireless sim card is a french number, so I wonder do I have to purchase international text roaming service to receive the sms from it?

In addition, regarding sms transmission service, does this sim card includes sms text limits, like only allowing 100 sms texts transmission in the plan? or does sms transmission use data? Is it possible for the sim to receive the sms in Canada, what is the cm command to check incoming sms texts?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

AFAIK, there’s no limitation on our side for SMSes as long as you do a resonable consumption of them as part of the mangOH trial offer.

In Europe, we don’t need any plan to receive SMSes, wherever it comes from (and it is 100% free). I don’t know the rule in Canada. You may want to check this point with your telecom operator.

Your mangOH can receive SMSes too. You can manage them (read, delete) with the cm sms command. For more information, type cm sms help or visit the documentation here: https://docs.legato.io/latest/toolsTarget_cm.html#toolsTarget_cm_sms

.Thibs.

Hi Thibs,

That makes sense. but can you clarify “resonable consumption” a little bit?

Did you mean as long as the data doesnt get used up in the sim card, I can transmit as many as SMS’s I want without charging me extra money?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

By “resonable consumption” I mean few SMSes sent per day at maximum (we don’t count SMSes received). At some point, when the cost related to your SMS consumption will hit the equivalent cost of the 100MB data plan, someone at Sierra will contact you and ask you to buy a proper connectivity offer to continue the experience. Note: it’s hard to say how many SMSes it corresponds to, because the cost depends on countries and telecom operators you are roaming onto.

How many SMSes are you planning to send by week?

.Thibs.
